My New York Cycle Club No-Show
and Last Minute Dropout Policy
I am now keeping track of members who withdraw from one of my Cue Sheet rides less than 24 before the start, or do not show up at all, without notifying me.
If you do this too many times, I may remove you from my rides.
This has NO EFFECT on any other NYCC rides, and does not apply to any Training Rides, or major club events where I may happen to be one leader (such as the All Class Ride). This only applies to the Cue Sheet rides I lead.
As a ride leader and former B-Rides Coordinator for the NYCC, I noticed a habit of some members to sign up for my Cue Sheet rides, and drop them at the last minute, without notifying me. This can result in long waiting lists that only clear the day before the ride, and riders getting added to my rides at the last minute.
For the vast majority of rides, this is not a problem, and many leaders are fine with last-minute changes. Many members are also accustomed to the current system. As a result, I don’t think it makes sense to develop club-wide policies to try and stop this behavior.
However, my rides are different than most. They almost always involve taking trains to the start and riding in somewhat remote locations, and I need to limit the number of spots. This means people who want to go on the ride can be discouraged from signing up, while people who aren’t interested occupy a spot and don't show up. It also means that some members have no idea if they will be on my ride until Friday afternoon, when the wait list starts to clear. Dropping at the last minute without notifying me indicates a low level of interest, as well as a lack of courtesy to me and your fellow members.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via the NYCC messaging system.
